Olympics 2021 updates: Gold medal game at stake for U.S. men’s hoops, USWNT seeks bronze, plus more track action in Tokyo

August 5, 2021

We’ve now reached the point of the Olympic Games in which we’re inundated with a bunch of lesser-known sports, and thus left contemplating the extreme difficulty of athletic pursuits such as artistic swimming and sports climbing. But we’re also nearing the end of the journey for some more recognizable teams.

Case in point: There’s a spot in the gold-medal game on the line as Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and U.S. men’s basketball face Australia — the same country the U.S. women’s hoops team defeated on Tuesday night — in a semifinal matchup at 12:15 a.m. ET.

Then, in the wee hours of Thursday morning, the USWNT takes on Australia in the women’s soccer bronze-medal match. … If Team USA vs. Australia wasn’t already a rivalry, it is now.
