Manchester United star Victor Lindelof steps up recovery from injury in gym amid club's defensive crisis

The Manchester United defender, 24, picked up a muscular strain in the stalemate with Crystal Palace last month and missed the weekend's 2-2 draw at Southampton.

He is working hard to try and regain his fitness ahead of a hectic festive schedule but is unlikely to be back in contention before Christmas.

Lindelof – who was United's player of the month in November – flew out to Dubai for a holiday with wife Maja and the couple took with them a Red Devils coach to help with training.

And the Swedish Player of the Year took to Instagram to show how his recovery is coming along.

The videos show the centre-back completing a variety of gym exercises, running around a track and practising with the football at his feet at the NAS Sports Complex.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho praised his defender for carrying on despite the injury and labelled him "brave" and a "fantastic example".

But speaking after the Crystal Palace game, The Special One said: "He has a muscular problem and muscular problem takes time.

"I would say if we have him for the Christmas period where we need, if possible, every player to be available for that difficult period until the next match on January 2.

"If we can have everyone available for that period will be good."

The Manchester United boss started Saturday's game at St Mary's with a back three of Phil Jones in between conventional midfielders Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

And with Jones a doubt for tonight's crunch clash against Arsenal, Marcos Rojo could make his first appearance of the season.

The Argentine defender had been out with a knee injury but made the bench against Southampton.

But Premier League top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing such a makeshift back line, which is expected to include young right-back Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese youngster, 19, came off the bench to make his Premier League debut at the weekend but Ashley Young's yellow card means he is suspended for tonight's game.

Arsenal legend and SunSport columnist Ian Wright reckons Arsenal will never have a better chance to beat a struggling Manchester United side.
