FRED'S transfer talks with Lazio broke down thanks to a former Chelsea manager rejecting him.

And that has paved the way for him to move to Galatasaray.

The Manchester United midfielder was a target for Italian giants Lazio.

Chairman Claudio Lotito held strong interest in the Brazilian, who is deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

But when he proposed the player, manager Maurizio Sarri pulled the plug – simply because he didn't want Fred.

And Sarri has previous in shutting down other options on his boss' wishlist – and instead suggests the players he wants to bring in.

Lotito said: “I was prepared to open talks with Manchester United and bid for Fred.

"But Maurizio Sarri told me no — he doesn’t want Fred.

“He did the same with Giovani Lo Celso.

"Sarri wants Piotr Zielinski and Samuele Ricci."

And Sarri's veto means Galatasaray can wrap up their deal for Fred unchallenged.

The Turkish outfit have reportedly already agreed personal terms with the former Shakhtar Donetsk man.

However, they are yet to settle on a transfer fee with United.

Fred – who was also linked with Fulham this summer – joined the Red Devils in 2018 for a whopping £52million.

He has scored 14 goals in 213 appearances for the club and won his first trophy with the League Cup success last season.

However, the holding midfielder struggled to justify his whopping price tag.

United have also lost teenage star Kobbie Mainoo for the first part of the season.

He suffered an ankle injury in the opening minutes of the pre-season friendly defeat to Real Madrid.

And that will likely accelerate their pursuit of Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Rivals Liverpool were also interested in Amrabat.

However, reports this week claimed the Red Devils were his preferred option.

And United are said to have submitted a £21.5million bid for the 26-year-old, who shone at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Italian side Fiorentina want around £26m for their in-demand star.
