Lisandro Martinez next club odds: Arsenal lead Man Utd for Ajax defender, Liverpool and Man City also keeping tabs | The Sun

ARSENAL have emerged as the new leaders in the race to sign Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

The Gunners have overtaken Manchester United in Betfair's odds list as the favourites to sign the Argentina international.

The 24-year-old signed for Ajax from Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia in 2019 for £6m.

Martinez has won two league titles and one Dutch Cup since signing for the Amsterdam club, and was named the club's Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season.

The centre back was also part of the squad that helped Argentina win their first Copa America title since 1993, as well as the subsequent CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions side that beat Italy at Wembley last month.

Martinez has been a permanent fixture in the Ajax side since signing, making 118 appearances in his three seasons with the club.

Arsenal are the leaders in race to secure Martinez's signature, in what has been a busy transfer window already for Mikel Arteta's side.

£87m has already been spent by the Gunners so far, having signed Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos, but it seems Arteta still wants to strengthen his centre back department.

Ben White and Gabriel were reliable for the most part last season, with the highly rated William Saliba also returning from loan as capable back up.

However, with the return of European football to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal will need a much larger pool of players to rely on, and strength in depth will be crucial if they wish to compete in the latter stages of tournaments.

  • Arsenal – 11/10
  • Manchester United – 6/4
  • Manchester City – 12/1
  • Liverpool – 20/1
  • Tottenham – 25/1

Manchester United have also been heavily linked with the Argentine defender. Erik ten Hag was the Ajax manager who signed Martinez from Argentina three years ago, and it's believed the same manager wants to bring him to the Red Devils this summer.

United were the front runners to sign the defender a matter of weeks ago but have since been overtaken by the Gunners in the race.

None of United's centre backs impressed greatly last season, with Raphael Varane struggling with injuries throughout and Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof finding form increasingly hard to come by.

The Old Trafford side finished the season with more goals conceded than Burnley, who ended up getting relegated.

United are currently 6/4 with Betfair to sign Martinez this window.

The likes of Manchester City and Liverpool have also been said to be interested in the Argentine, though it's thought that centre back isn't a major priority for the teams that boasted the joint best defensive records last season.

City are priced at 12/1, with Liverpool at 20/1. Tottenham are also in the picture at 25/1.
