Kansas takes over at No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches pollDecember 10, 2018
The No. 1 position in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll has changed hands again, an indication that we’re in for a fun season.
Kansas reclaims the top spot it held in the preseason poll. The Jayhawks received 26 of 32 first-place votes this week, though they narrowly escaped New Mexico State over the weekend.
The remaining six first-place nods were spread among four other squads in the top six. Duke is back up to second overall and picked up one of the No. 1 votes. Another went to Virginia, which moves up a spot to No. 3. Tennessee, the team responsible for the change at the top thanks to its win against Gonzaga, edged into fourth. The Vols, however, were voted as high as second on several ballots but no firsts.
Michigan checks in at No. 5, just two points behind Tennessee, and was voted first on three ballots. Gonzaga retained a No. 1 vote but slides to sixth overall, just a single point behind the Wolverines.

Nevada kept its record unblemished with a comeback win against Arizona State but was nudged down a place to No. 7 thanks to Tennessee’s win. Auburn, Michigan State and Florida State round out the top ten.
In an upset-heavy week, Kentucky takes a 10-spot drop to No. 18 after its overtime loss to Seton Hall, and Kansas State falls nine slots to No. 24 after a loss to Tulsa. No. 22 Houston enters the rankings this week replacing Purdue.
