Taylor was competing in the Gold Coast Races when disaster struck.
The veteran jockey was trying to load his 15-1 mount Final Ascent into the stalls for the fourth race when it flipped backwards.
Racehorses weigh around 500kg – just under 80st – and it is understood Taylor was trapped under the horse once it fell.
The track's racing manager Ian Brown said: "He was just behind the barriers and the horse reared up and fell back on him."
Critical care paramedics gave Taylor emergency treatment at the track before he was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Taylor's manager Melissa Shield posted an update on Twitter.
She wrote: "Jason Taylor has been moved from ICU to Trauma ward with eight broken ribs, punctured lung, bleeding to the lungs, facial injuries and bruising.
"He is extremely lucky after the horrific accident at the Gold Coast yesterday. Thinking of you x."
Taylor has ridden 872 winners and earned connections a whopping £12.3million from his performances on the track.
Punters sent messages of support to Taylor – and prayed he made a quick recovery in much the same way Turkish jockey Harun Canakci did.
Canakci almost choked to death after swallowing his tongue in a terrifying three-horse pile-up.
Fortunately he was saved by two quick-thinking rivals also caught up in the carnage and released from hospital after three days.
