Jack Wilshere 'rested' by West Ham for Cardiff game after playing five minutes in comeback match at Newcastle

The former England playmaker, 26, was instantly "rested" after returning as a five-minute substitute in Saturday's 3-0 win at Newcastle.

Pellegrini is is determined to ease injury-plagued Wilshere back carefully.

And he also left out defenders Pablo Zabaleta and Fabián Balbuena this evening after they started at St James' Park.

But it is Wilshere's complete omission tonight that baffled social media – with some fans suggesting he still has niggling injury problems and might never return properly.

Pellegrini had gone into the match with extravagant praise for the ex-Arsenal ace.

The Chilean said: “Players of the quality of Wilshere can cost £100m, £90m, £70m?

"Good creative midfielders are just very expensive. He wanted to play at West Ham, we took the risk.

“It has not been a good month for him but we have the second part of the season and I hope he will play most games.”

Wilshere’s long-running injury woes continued after his summer switch from the Emirates when he crocked his ankle.

But Pellegrini is confident the stylist will help drive the Hammers into the top half of the season after Christmas.
