FORMER Manchester United star Nicky Butt still can’t sell his Cheshire mansion after more than a year on the market – despite slashing £1.5 million off the asking price.

Butt put his house up for sale in April 2019 following his split from wife Shelley Barlow.

The 39-cap England international was arrested that month on suspicion of assault when police were called to the marital home.

However the case was dropped as Shelley chose not to give evidence in court.

He instead accepted a caution for criminal damage.

It is thought that Butt has moved into a flat nearby, and Shelley and their two children have been living in the mansion.

The 45-year-old reportedly first listed the six-bedroom pad for £7m.

However the midfielder – who now works for Manchester United as a coach – has been forced to slash the asking price to £5.5m.

The detached residence, built in 2007 with beautiful red bricks and a slate roof, is set in almost an acre of private gardens.

Inside the house is designed with a modern touch.

There are six bedrooms, four of which have en-suites, and also a large family bathroom.

The kitchen is high-spec, surrounded by modern sofas.

The house also has a huge private pool, separate gym and changing facilities.

The garden – complete with patio for al-fresco dining and a children’s play area – is surrounded with trees for privacy.

The triple garage is fitted out for three cars.

The house is being jointly marketed by estate agents Gascoigne Halman and Jackson-Stops.

They described it as “a handsome detached residence of superb proportions, standing in extensive gardens.”

During the coronavirus-lockdown it was the most expensive house on sale in the whole of Greater Manchester.

However footballers have been struggling to sell their plush pads in a tough housing market.

Nearby Butt’s former teammate Ryan Giggs is struggling to flog his former family home.

And down in Surrey, ex-England captain John Terry has slashed £500,000 of the price of one of his properties.

Butt made almost 400 appearances for Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a Champions League trophy.

He also played for Newcastle United and represented England between 1997 and 2004.

Butt co-owns Salford City with fellow Manchester United legends David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers.

He bought the house with wife Shelley for £4.4m in 2007, and they wed the following year.

However it is understood the couple separated shortly before the incident in April 2019.
