'I won't tell you this' – Frenkie de Jong refuses to deny talks with Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag amid transfer rumours

May 31, 2022

MANCHESTER UNITED transfer target Frenkie De Jong refused to divulge whether he has been in contact with Erik ten Hag.

But the midfielder, 25, did reveal that he has heard the rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

And despite Barcelona reportedly being open to selling the Dutchman, the club have not spoken to him about a possible move.

Because of that it appears he has not really considered a switch to United, though refused to deny he has spoken to new manager Ten Hag.

He told Dutch outlet AD: “Of course I hear about the links to Manchester United, but the people in charge of Barça didn't tell me anything.

“So then I will assume that there is no agreement, nothing to worry about. Contacts with Ten Hag? I won't tell you this.”

De Jong knows Ten Hag well from their days together at Ajax, with the pair achieving domestic success and reaching the Champions League semi-final before the midfielder's departure in 2019.

Ten Hag has prioritised a new midfielder this summer and the Red Devils are reportedly prepared to offer an eye-watering £395,000 a week in order to tempt De Jong into a move.

United were also boosted last week with the news Barcelona had eyed Valencia star Carlos Soler as a potential replacement for De Jong.

But it seems Barca will not sell the former Ajax man until they reach an agreement for Man City's Bernardo Silva or Robert Lewandowski, who is keen to leave Bayern Munich.

De Jong's comments also suggest United are yet to make a bid or meet his £65million valuation.

But the club is still pushing to sign De Jong, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who says a deal may be difficult due to the player's desire to play Champions League football.

United are believed to have offered both the player and his club an ultimatum – stating they do not want the transfer saga to drag on and are willing to walk away from the deal.
