'I want to score, but miss' – Timo Werner doesn't know why Chelsea fans support him so much despite his lack of goals

January 18, 2022

TIMO WERNER says he is baffled as to why Chelsea fans continue to support him given his under-whelming goal return.

The Germany forward was signed from RB Leipzig two years ago and so far has 18 goals in 70 games for the Blues.

He could easily have doubled his tally had he not missed a bucket load of gilt-edged chances.

Now the 25-year-old speedster has opened up about his profligacy and revealed how much the backing from Blues fans means to him.

He told Premier League journalist Lynsey Hooper:"Sometimes I don’t know why they are supporting me so much, because I’m a striker and I want to score but miss chances.

"It is so fun to play in front of the Chelsea fans.

"And when they give the support they give me, it makes me stronger.

"But when I miss chances or have hard times I try to give my best every game, and 100 per cent to make sure the team are happy."

Werner has six goals so far this season and two assists.

But his campaign was disrupted by a hamstring strain he picked up in October which sidelined him until December.

Werner was signed by the Blues for £53million in the summer of 2020 and penned a £9m-a-year contract, worth £170,000-a-week.
