Golf tips and FREE bets: Three picks for the John Deere Classic including great in form each-way options

July 8, 2021

THE John Deere Classic takes place at TPC Deere Run in Illinois this week.

And with most of the top stars over in the UK for the Open next week there may be some value to find for punters.

Our man David Facey has made his three picks for the week.

Tips for John Deere Classic

Hot shot: Sungjae im, 16-1.

The Koreran star’s share of eighth place at the Rocket Mortgage Classic was only his second top ten in his last 19 starts, but it could herald the start of a resurgence.

Im was the model of consistency last year, and in 2019 when he won the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year award, and his recent struggles can only be a blip on the road to much better things.

He has still managed more sub-70 rounds than anyone else in the game this year, and putting four of them together in Detroit last week suggested it is time to start backing him.

The fact he has decided to skip next week’s Open rather than undergo the strict coronavirus restrictions means he will be even more determined to make hay this week.

Mid price: Hank Lebioda, 40-1.

Lebioda’s last two efforts – fifth in the Travellers and fourth in the Rocket Mortgage last week – are far better form figures than most of the players in this field can muster.

He was an impressive 17 under par last week against better opposition, and is now 47 under for his last four starts. That shows his stellar back-to-back performances were no fluke.

Leboida, 27, also has two other top twenty finishes in his last six starts to show he is finding his feet on the PGA Tour, after making the step up from the Korn Ferry last year.

He is hitting plenty of greens and is one of the top scramblers on the PGA Tour. If he has a half decent week with the putter, he should be bang in contention again.

Long(ish) shot: Kyle Stanley 55-1

Most of the players who normally be 100-1 and up are half those odds at most, with the stars away to concentrate on preparing for the Open. And most of those at three figures make precious little appeal.

But in a field desperately short on quality, Stanley – who was 26th in the world rankings less than three years ago – could take another step on the comeback trail.

He is still only 33, but putting woes saw him plunge to 264th in the rankings last year. But he seems to have got his love of the game back, and his tee to green stats this year have been pretty eye-catching.

A share of eighth at the Charles Schwab Challenge a few weeks ago and a good performance at the Texas Open suggest he can definitely make his presence felt in this company
