Tributes are pouring in for Momo Zhou after the popular former World Cup of Darts star tragically passed away aged 31.

The shock news was confirmed by the Chinese player's sponsors Target in a social media announcement on Thursday morning.

Zhou was one of the finest Asian players and made history when becoming only the second female ever to compete in the PDC World Cup.

She starred in the 2018 tournament in Frankfurt after winning the China qualifying round, joining Russia's Anastasia Dobromyslova as the only other women to take to the oche in the event.

And Zhou went viral in the event for hilariously celebrating missed doubles from the opposing Switzerland team in a round one clash.

"Celebrating when you're opponent misses! I've seen it all – that's magnificent," leading commentator Wayne Mardle laughed at the time.

And Zhou had the attention of darts fans once again last year when she hit a near-perfect 10-dart leg in the Chinese Premier League.

"We are sad to announce the passing of Momo Zhou (31) a loved member of the #TeamTarget family based in China," Target's announcement read.

"We would like to thank you all for her support over the years and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."

The darting world's tributes have been lead by pundit Paul Nicholson, who wrote: "The news about Zhou Momo is utterly unbelievable. So damn tragic, and at the age of 31."

Women's darts legend Deta Hedman said: "So very sad that this young lady has passed away at just 31 years old , was great watching her play PDC world cup , R.I.P Moo Chou aka Zhou Momo."

And fellow World Darts Federation player Lorraine Winstanley added: "Such sad news. My thoughts are with your loved ones. RIP."

Zhou was the first Chinese woman to play in a PDC event and later expressed her ambitions to compete in the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.
