LIVERPOOL went into Sunday's action top of the Premier League table but some fans were baffled by the trophy popping up at Anfield.

Facing Chelsea in the 4.30pm kick-off, the Reds were ahead of Manchester City by two points having played a game more.

They played after City's trip to Crystal Palace, Pep Guardiola's side needing to win at Selhurst Park to claim top spot after both had played 33 games.

It led to viewers questioning Sky Sports bringing the trophy to Anfield for their live coverage of the clashes, in particular those of a sky blue persuasion, one tweeting: "Why do they have our trophy at Anfield?"

Liverpool supporters also had reason to be worried, one lamenting: "As if we needed more pressure."

Another Twitter Red admitted: "The second I saw that trophy in Anfield, the nerves kicked in."

The Citizens have been the form team of late, overtaking Liverpool by winning every league game so far in 2019.

While Jurgen Klopp's men won their last four ahead of facing Chelsea, draws with Everton, Manchester United, West Ham and Leicester cut their lead.

Why is the Premier League trophy at Anfield ?

However it is City with the tougher run-in, still yet to face Tottenham and Leicester at home alongside trips to local rivals United and relegation battlers Burnley and Brighton.

In comparison, Liverpool are up against already relegated Huddersfield either side of away days at Cardiff and Newcastle, completing the campaign with a clash against Wolves at Anfield.

The bookies nonetheless favour City, who have the experience of winning three Premier League titles in the past five years, whereas Liverpool last lifted the crown in 1990.
