Edinson Cavani keeps Man Utd No7 shirt for Wolves clash despite Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

August 29, 2021

CRISTIANO RONALDO is unlikely to wear the No7 at Manchester United this season after Edinson Cavani was given the shirt.

The Red Devils will now need to apply for special dispensation if CR7 wants to wear his famous jersey on his return to Old Trafford.

Both Man Utd's and the Premier League's official website has Cavani, 34, down to wear the No7 against Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

As per Prem rules, the player with the No7 at Old Trafford retains the shirt throughout the season for which it is allocated.

Section M of the rule book relating to players' identification reads: "Before the commencement of each season each club shall allocate a different shirt number to each member of its first team squad.

"A club shall likewise allocate a shirt number to any player joining its first team squad during the season.

"While he remains with the club, a player will retain his shirt number throughout the season for which it is allocated.

"Upon a player leaving a club the shirt number allocated to him may be re-allocated."

United must now allocate a different number for Ronaldo OR apply for special dispensation to allow them to amend their numbers.

According to ESPN reporter Dale Johnson, the Premier League has NEVER granted special dispensation during the competition's 29-year existence.

Ronaldo has wore the No7 each season – bar his first year at Real Madrid, when he wore the No9 – since first joining United in 2003.

The Portuguese star did wear the No28 when he first came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon in 2003 – and that shirt is available at United.

Rival Lionel Messi opted against taking Neymar's No10 shirt at Paris Saint-Germain and chose the No30 instead, his first number at Barcelona.

Ronaldo can still wear the No7 in the Champions League as United can allocate different numbers for European competitions.
