DU Pioneers win second straight in Omaha pod, down Miami 5-1 – The Denver PostDecember 11, 2020
The University of Denver scored the final five goals Thursday to defeat Miami (Ohio) 5-1 at the National Collegiate Hockey Conference pod in Omaha, Neb. The Pioneers (2-3), who defeated No. 1 North Dakota on Tuesday, won their second straight after losing three one-goal games to begin the season.
Freshman Carter Savoie tied it 1-1 Thursday with his NCAA-high sixth goal of the season. He has now scored in all five games and stands fifth in national points-per-game at 1.60. Classmates Mike Benning and McKade Webster scored in the third period to blow open a 3-1 game.
Senior Ryan Barrow and junior Brett Stapley struck in the second period as Denver took over in front of goalie Magnus Chrona (22 saves).
“I thought the first 10 minutes were a little slow for us but we got our legs going in the last 50,” DU coach David Carle said. “Again, another good third-period from us. In a game where we’re up 3-1, I thought we came out in the third and continued to assert ourselves and kept our foot on the gas and put it away. So for that, we’re excited. We’re seeing signs of growth and maturity in our group, from our leadership on down.”
Denver plays next on Saturday against two-time defending NCAA champion Minnesota-Duluth, which rallied to defeat the Pioneers 2-1 in the season opener on Dec. 2.
