The defender lost his cool minutes after Glenn Murray gave the Seagulls a 1-0 lead scoring from a penalty.

Tensions boiled over as Duffy's moment of madness saw him headbutting the Palace defender following Seagulls' own penalty appeal, four minutes after Murray's goal.

As Brighton players were protesting, the Ireland international suddenly clashed heads with Van Aanholt.

The Dutch defender fell on the pitch and the referee showed Duffy a red card without hesitation.

That has been a fourth red card shown in Brighton's last four Premier League matches.

Despite playing with ten men, the Seagulls had a three-goal lead before the break and won the derby 3-1.

Violence broke out before the derby as fans of both clubs clashed with the police close to Brighton station after Eagles' fans reportedly sang homophobic chants.

Wilfired Zaha was also verbally abused by a Brighton fan before the match sparking an ugly scuffle between them.
