Ascot Races: Tips, racecards and betting preview for Valiant Stakes day live on ITV – The Sun

July 25, 2020

ASCOT stages a fantastic card on Sunday afternoon.

The ITV cameras are in town for four races, including a pair of Group 3's and two hot handicaps. Our man Jack Keene has taken a close look at the big terrestrial races.

1.55 Play Nifty Fifty Exclusively At Betfred Handicap

A cracker to start off the live ITV4 coverage.

Magic J was impressive at Sandown and the well-bred Scat Daddy colt remains open to further progress over 5f.

He commands respect off 8lb higher, but narrow preference is for the unbeaten BOMB PROOF.

He was among the market leaders for the big two-year-old races at Royal Ascot last season after his winning debut at York.

Injury kept him off the track for the rest of the campaign, but it was great to see him make a winning debut for James Fanshawe at Beverley.

He is in deeper here but the engine remains intact and he is entitled to have improved a tonne for that reappearance.

Aplomb is becoming frustrating and he was outpaced before running on to finish fourth over C&D last time.

If he is ridden more prominently he could hit the frame, while Mountain Peak is a model of consistency and won't be far away.

SELECTION: Bomb Proof

2.30 Betfred "Fred's Pushes" Handicap

ALMANIA has become disappointing, having looked very exciting for Sir Michael Stoute once upon a time.

Nevertheless, he is still a talented horse and he just ran out of gas in a big 1m6f handicap at the Royal meeting on his return (when left with loads of ground to make up).

The return to 1m4f looks a good move and he gets the nod ahead of Country, who won cosily at Haydock but will need to take another step forward in a better race.

Sam Cooke was well-backed but never stood any chance from a poor position at Newmarket last time. It's too soon to give up on him and he is feared, while Dash Of Spice will be sharper for his comeback run and could hit the frame.

SELECTION: Almania

3.05 Betfred Valiant Fillies' Stakes (Group 3)

BILLESDON BROOK is a remarkable mare and a brilliant servant to the Hannon team.

She put a couple of below-par runs behind her to finish a narrow second in the Falmouth Stakes last time out.

She can throw in the odd stinker, but a reproduction of anything like that form will be good enough in this lower grade.

Miss O Connor is very talented and would pose a big threat were the ground to ease significantly ahead of Sunday. She needs it soft, so keep an eye on the weather.

Agincourt could leave her Newmarket performance behind now returned to the scene of her excellent Duke Of Cambridge performance.

Shimmering was thrown in at the deep end in the 1000 Guineas, but it's too soon to write her off.

SELECTION: Billesdon Brook

3.40 Princess Margaret Betfred Stakes (Group 3)

Some very promising fillies on show here.

More Beautiful was backed as if defeat was out of the question in the Queen Mary – but she barely raised a leg and could only finish ninth.

She is no doubt better than that but is short-enough at the head of the betting, given she is taken on some nice types.

They include Caroline Dale, who was third in the Queen Mary and opened her account in ready fashion at Windsor on her next start.

Clive Cox's Isabella Giles showed a fantastic attitude to remain unbeaten at Newbury. She is tough and is well worth a crack at this grade.

But SANTOSHA caught the eye when finishing like a train from an unpromising position in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket.

The runner-up has since given the form a boost with a decisive Listed victory at Sandown, and she will be suited by this more conventional track.

SELECTION: Santosha
