Arsenal open talks with Mohamed Elneny over shock new contract with just one-month left on deal after impressive form

May 9, 2022

ARSENAL are reportedly set to open talks with Mohamed Elneny over a shock new contract.

The Egyptian midfielder, 29, will become a free agent in June along with strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah with all three expected to depart for free.

Boss Mikel Arteta committed his future to the club last week by penning a new long-term deal.

Now The Athletic claims that Elneny has been in discussions to extend his contract – with the Gunners “hopeful an agreement can be found” for the ace.

The star struggled for action under previous manager Unai Emery, which led to a loan to Besiktas in 2019, and he initially struggled under Arteta as well.

However, he has now emerged as a key member of the Champions League-chasing side after he was given an opportunity following three straight defeats.

Elneny was recalled for the victory at Chelsea last month and has played every minute since in the victories over Manchester United, West Ham and yesterday’s 2-1 triumph against Leeds.

He has shone in the absence of injured Thomas Partey and now appears set to be rewarded.

This latest report states that talks between the club and player are only at an “initial stage” but Arsenal are “determined to keep” him.

They also add that he is a “popular member” of Arteta’s squad and that his “experience and character” are “valued highly” by Arteta.
