AC MILAN legend Gennaro Gattuso once ate a snail after his team-mates offered him £13,000 – despite the life-threatening risks it carries.

The Italian ate the snail before Milan’s 2007 Champions League last-16 clash against Manchester United.

Gattuso’s team-mates noticed a snail on the ground and told the midfielder he was not “brave” enough to eat it.

After the claim, the now Milan manager said if each player put in €500 (£432) he would eat the snail – and after €15,000 (£13,000) was raised Gattuso completed the daring challenge.

The crazy midfielder explained that after eating the snail he gave the money to four coaching staff who were on an internship in Milan.

Gattuso said: “The day before an important game, Milan – Manchester (United) we stood concentrated in a circle during warm-up.

“There was a snail on the ground. They all said that I’m not brave enough to eat it alive. I’ve said: ‘Fine, €500 from each of you and I will do it'.

“I wanted to give the reward to the four fitness coaches, who were on internship with us.

“I took the snail up, put it in my mouth and swallowed it. Later I gave them €15,000.”

Gattuso was unscathed after the dare and Milan went onto knock United out and beat their rivals Liverpool in the final to lift the Champions League trophy.

However, swallowing a raw snail or slug carries life-threatening risks and Australian Sam Ballard at age 19 was left paralysed by swallowing a slug as a dare.

In 2010 Sam rugby player Sam swallowed the slug and quickly fell ill and was taken to hospital where he was found to be infected with rat lungworm.

Sam contracted eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis and lapsed into a coma for 420 days leaving him a quadriplegic.

Now aged 28, Sam suffers seizures and cannot control his body temperature, the Daily Telegraph reported. He also has to be tube fed.
