You helped me end my relationship amicably and do what's best for our son

April 15, 2022

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I wrote to you, my girlfriend had taken our son and gone to have some “space” for a few days.

I was hurt and confused and couldn’t understand what had gone wrong.

After five years together, I believed we were happy.

I’m 35, she’s 32, and our son is two.

You reassured me that I hadn’t done anything wrong and said some of her behaviour sounded controlling.

You encouraged me to try to talk to her, with the aid of a professional counsellor if she’d agree.

You recommended Tavistock Relationships (020 7380 1960, tavistockrelationships.org) and sent me your support pack on counselling.

You also told me that, whatever happened, I could still be a good father to my son.

My girlfriend and I ended up splitting.

But we’ve worked out a good way of co-parenting, so our son hasn’t suffered from our break-up.

And it turns out you were right and our break-up was for the best.

Well done for separating in a way where you both put your son first. That is a proper achievement.
