Why Saturn return means your 30th birthday is such an important time

February 24, 2021

Astrology tells us when it’s time to grow up with the Saturn return.

Turning 30 is a major celebration, but this particular birthday can bring another energy into its wake.

Magnifying mirror wrinkle and grey hair analysis. Reckless jaunts to Wayne Rooney’s Ocean Club wearing a thong and nipple tassels. Sudden and ambitious career changes. Passionate relationship activity that blows up in our face.

Been there? Don’t worry, it’s not your fault.

We can blame the Saturn Return.

What is the Saturn Return?

The Saturn Return is an astrological event that we all encounter as our 30th birthday arrives (and again in our late 50s, and again in our late 80s, if we are lucky enough to make that).

It’s simply Saturn returning to the same spot in the sky – the same zodiac sign – that it was in when you were born.

It takes about 29.5 years for Saturn to complete one full orbit around the Sun (it’s a slow outer planet, meaning it’s far from the Sun and therefore takes longer to orbit). The impact of Saturn’s return to its original sign in our birth chart can extend an influence on us for up to three years.

But what is this influence?

Well, the Saturn Return is a kind of a rite of passage into adulthood. Saturn is the taskmaster planet, it’s like a Tiger Mom, or a super-tough life coach who takes us apart in order to rebuild us leaner, meaner and ready to get some.

Saturn’s presence means life lessons are going to be issued. Not all of them kind (especially if you’ve not really done much with your life thus far), but all of them useful.

At some point, we all realise we’re both 100% free to do what we want with our life, but also 100% accountable. It’s up to us and us alone to live it. No one can make things happen for us.

Saturn make us realise this and, in this light, look at what we’ve actually done with our life so far.

During the Saturn Return you will recall, review and process the wrong turns and missed opportunities you’ve endured in the preceding 30 years, and whether you have a plan at all for what’s coming next.

It can feel harsh, and no one likes criticism (especially from their own inner judge), but you’ve got to focus on the lessons.

Saturn is here to make you acknowledge, understand and process your negatives (so they don’t bother and trip you up anymore, and that’s no bad thing, frankly). Also, to acknowledge that time and opportunity are not endless, and that youth fades (gulp). You’re not bulletproof and you’re not immortal. You have a bag of tools, a book of rules and a ticking clock… get to it, get busy living, don’t waste time.

If you face into this phase of self-reflection and analysis with honesty and self-compassion, then you can come out the other side feeling really excited to be given this chance, while you’re still young and vibrant, to go for your dreams, to make every day count, to not drift or waste another moment of your oh-so-precious life.

So, what does this mean for you personally?

Depending on your Saturn sign, the life lessons and reflections you face into during the Saturn Return can take a different slant…

Saturn in Aries

You learn that you can’t do it all by yourself and you need to get the support and buy in of others in life, to achieve really big goals. Your competitiveness mellows and your openness to collaborations increases.

Saturn in Taurus

You realise your appetite for money, security and good living has to be matched by an equal force of energy and ambition.

No one is going to drop a million dollars in your lap; you have to work, work, work if you want the lifestyle you dream of. And now you are ready to do that.

Saturn in Gemini

You find your voice, and not the chatty gossipy one, but the authentic and wise voice that resides deep within.

Your confidence to recognise, acknowledge and act upon your own desires grows as you mature. You stop playing so many games, and you start playing to win.

Saturn in Cancer

Saturn Cancerians are super-sensitive and construct a tough crab shell to protect them from the world. This can manifest as extreme shyness, a reluctance to leave home, defensiveness, or an extended youth. It’s time to realise there is a safe place for you to carve your own path, and live independently. You can rely on yourself.

Saturn in Leo

Saturn in Leo can hint at excess driven by self-doubt and ‘performance anxiety’. You want a role that draws crowds, applause and accolades, but that means facing and impressing your own greatest critic: yourself. You have to learn to live with your inner critic, and satisfy or quell their demands.

Saturn in Virgo

Perfectionism is the key theme for Saturn in Virgo.

You work so hard, expect so much, and create standards across all areas of your life that are near on impossible to live up to. No one is doing this to you, you are doing it to yourself. You realise how lovable and valuable you are, flaws and all.

Saturn in Libra

Relationships, partnerships and collaborations are your greatest area of potential, and struggle.

In Saturn, the thorny side of connecting with others is revealed i.e. the sacrifices and compromises it takes to create and maintain a genuine relationship.

You have endured many life lessons here and are now ready to forge better relationships than ever.

Saturn in Scorpio

Scorpio is all about rebirth and transformation, and your 30th is likely to trigger a complete 180 degree turn. Themes of money, power and sex are all up for review and change. At the end of these two to three years of your Saturn Return it’s likely your life will be heading in a new, authentic direction.

Saturn in Sagittarius

Itchy feet is the main symptom of your Saturn Return. Perhaps you feel a yearning to live a different way in a different place, perhaps just to explore the world, perhaps, even, if you’ve been a traveller up to now, to start ‘nesting’. The theme of travel and of your place in the world is a real driver of lasting changes.

Saturn in Capricorn

Sometimes Saturn is linked to the male figures of authority in our lives (fathers, elder family members, siblings, teachers etc) and so this Saturn Return can be a period of time to resolve any unfinished business or issues there.

The double whammy of Saturn and Capricorn (Saturn’s sign) can also mean an over-dose of ambition, and a signal to actually chill more, to not push yourself so very hard.

Saturn in Aquarius

Aquarians love looking at the big picture, the state of the world and where they can help make it better.

Being a voice and a force for truth, social justice, global concerns, climate and natural world problems is likely to become more important to you. You realise what you care about, and where you want (in fact, now need) to make a difference.

Saturn in Pisces

Your Saturn Return awakens an interest in the fragility of human nature and physicality in you. You start to consider your skills and potential in healing, medicine, psychology or esoteric arts.

Your natural inclination to put others ahead of yourself is also up for review. Stop being a doormat, and put your own needs front and centre more often.
