Watch Two 700-Horsepower Pickups Face Off in a Drag RaceDecember 21, 2020
It’s a bit crazy to think that anyone with a license and some cash can go out and buy a pickup truck with more than 700 horsepower from their local Ford or Ram dealer. The Ford Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport and Ram 1500 TRX are great examples of the industry’s desire for excess, so it’s only natural we find out which is quicker in a drag race.
The Ram 1500 TRX is one of the most exciting vehicles of 2020. It’s the Hellcat-powered pickup we’ve been asking Fiat Chrysler about for years now, come to life. In this application, that 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 sends 702 horsepower to all four wheels via a permanent four-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though it may be built for high-speed off-roading, it’s still wildly quick on pavement, with a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds.
In the other corner sits the ridiculous F-150 Super Snake. Modified by Shelby American, it gets a distinctive body kit, as well as new brakes and suspension pieces. Under the hood is a 770-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that sounds menacing. Thanks to the street-angled setup, 0-60 takes an absurd 3.45 seconds.
In a straight-up drag put on by the Throttle House YouTube channel, the TRX is able to out ahead thanks to its built-in launch control. But the Shelby’s more capable top end means it’s able to pull ahead right before the finish. In a roll race, the Shelby doesn’t have to worry about launching, and instantly takes the lead over the heavier, less aerodynamically efficient TRX, all the way to the end.
