Thousands of Brits can apply for £5,000 grant on energy bills from today

September 30, 2020

From today (September 30), thousands of households in England will be able to apply for help on their energy bills.

Under the Government's new Green Home Grants, the scheme will give households £5,000 and £10,000 vouchers.

The money will go towards insulation or improving the home's energy rating.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the initiative during his July mini-Budget revealing it could also create around 100,000 jobs.

He said the scheme will give over 600,000 homeowners in England vouchers to install insulation, heat pumps and draft proofing.

It will also help cut energy bill prices as Brits now prepare for the colder seasons.

In total, the Government estimates the measures could save families a whopping £600 a year on gas and electricity.

Business and Energy Secretary Alok Sharma said: "Green home improvements will save people money on their energy bills, help to cut carbon emissions, and create new work for many thousands of builders, plumbers and other tradespeople."

Qualifying households will get the voucher worth up to £5,000 to help cover the cost of their energy improvements.

But if you're a low-income household and receive certain benefits, you might be eligible for a £10,000 voucher instead.

The maximum value of the voucher is £10,000.

To apply for the voucher you must live in England and own your home or be a private or social landlord.

The improvements include insulating your home to reduce your energy use or installing a low-carbon heating to lower the amount of carbon dioxide your house produces.

Also the available measures are split into "primary" and "secondary" measures.

You can register your interest on the Simple Energy Advice (SEA) website now.

You can also check what help you can apply for and search for an approved supplier online.

Those who have ticked all the boxes can apply from today (September 30).

Brits eligible for the grant must make sure the voucher is spent – and all the work is completed – by March 31, 2021.
