Spoiler alert: This recap contains details from Tuesday’s episode of ABC’s “The Conners.”

The Conner family is broke. Ha, ha, ha!

Well, it’s not as simple as that. However, Tuesday’s episode of “The Conners,” the third to last of the “Roseanne” spinoff’s first season, was sobering and at times funny as the working-class family encountered the financial peril of a surprise hospital bill.

Although it wasn’t the ABC comedy’s funniest or deepest episode, “Rage Against the Machine” (nice title!) dealt with the kind of money issue encountered by millions of families but usually not presented on TV. (And, unless the Conners are the type of family that leaves its tree up well past Christmas – certainly a possibility –  this episode probably was originally scheduled to air in December.)

With son D.J. (Michael Fishman) ailing, Dan (John Goodman) takes over his vending machine route and gets hurt when a machine falls on him. He arrives home with one arm in a sling and his wallet suffering from thousands of dollars in health-care bills, even though he’s on Medicare.
