Feliz cumpleaños! Spanish royal fans mark King Felipe’s 52nd birthday with a sweet throwback snap showing the cherub-like prince aged 5 in shorts, ankle socks and buckled shoes

Spanish royal fans were treated to a trip down memory lane today, in the form of an adorable throwback photo of a cherubic King Felipe.

To mark the monarch’s 52nd birthday, the Instagram fan account spanish.royals shared a vintage image of Felipe when he was five-year-old.

The account posted two pictures of the King of Spain, one when he was a young blond-haired child in 1973, and another more recent image.

In the older image a young King Felipe was dressed up in a blue shirt and black shorts, with pristine while ankle socks and buckled shoes.

His blond locks were neatly styled away from his face as he gazed off to the side of the camera.

The throwback shot showed the future monarch with his parents King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, and his two sisters Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina, who were dressed in pretty orange frocks to match their mother’s.

While as a child he maintained a straight face, the older king appeared to be more lighthearted as he was captured bursting into a laugh.

In the more recent image King Filipe donned a crisp patterned blue shirt during an outdoors photo call

The caption read: ‘On this day (January 30) in 1968, His Majesty King Felipe VI was born in Madrid, Spain at the Nuestra Señora de Loreto Clinic, to then Infante Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sofía of Greece and Denmark.

‘Happy birthday, Your Majesty! ¡Muchas felicidades, Majestad!’

He ascended the throne in 2014 upon the abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos I.

Sadly, the King’s birthday celebrations have no doubt been overshadowed by the recent death of his aunt, Pilar de Borbon, 83, from colon cancer.

Yesterday, Felip and his wife Letizia put on a sombre display as they attended her funeral service in Madrid.

Baptised María del Pilar, the late Duchess of Badajoz was the granddaughter of the former King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Princess Louise of Orléans, and was given the title of Infanta of Spain (given to sons and daughters of kings) when her brother King Juan Carlos ascended the throne.

King Juan Carlos’ son is King Felipe, making Princess Pilar de Borbon Felipe’s aunt.
