The Selkirk Rex has been gradually growing in popularity thanks to their unique look and two curly-haired cats called Gina and Gepetto have now taken the internet by storm. Their owner, Eleonora Muccio, is a breeder from Switzerland. She told Tyla that she fell head over heels in love with the breed after seeing them at an expo in Geneva

Gina, Gepetto and their kittens, now have 130k loyal followers on Instagram.

Despite the cats’ shaggy appearance, Ms Muccio describes their fur as “softer than straight hair” as the hair is finer. She did warn that they malt a lot in the summer due to the heat.

She said that the breed gets more earwax and eye discharge than other cats so she needs to clean their eyes and ears once a week to prevent them getting infections.

The breed first originated in Montana in 1987 when a rescue cat gave birth to a curly-haired kitten.

The kitten was placed with breeder Jeri Newman, who named her Miss DePesto after the curly-haired character from TV series Moonlighting.

Jeri then made the kitten the dominant breeder and long-haired and short-haired breeds of Selkirks were developed, Daily Star reports.

You can buy Selkirk Rex kittens in the UK and you can expect them to cost around £500- £800.

According to advice on Purina: “Selkirks have an alert and active personality with a sweet and endearing disposition.

“This laid back breed is happy to sit on your lap and loves to have a cuddle. It is also more than happy to play games and makes a great family pet.”
