Scammers usually call people to try to steal their bank details from them. Some of the most common scams include debt management, lottery, and bank scams, among others, according to Unkownphone.com.

As well as looking at the most common types of scams, the company has also undertaken research to find which area codes are displayed most often on people’s screens when they receive a nuisance call.

The data showed that many Britons type “who called me uk number” into Google when they receive a spam call.

Searches for this phrase has risen by a whopping 160 percent in the last 12 months, according to Google Trends.

As for the area codes most common amongst the numbers being considered as spam, most of them are the UK’s largest cities.

With a total of 628,200 website visits in the last 12 months, London numbers exhibit the most spam-like behaviour.

It is therefore more common for Britons to receive a nuisance call from a number starting with an area code of 020 than any other area code.

In second place is the Greater Manchester area code, which is 0161.

This area code has been searched for 268,070 times over the past 12 months.

reported on its website for this area code include debt management, lottery, and boiler scams.

In third place, with visits for numbers from this area code totalling 162,340 in the last 12 months, is 0191.

This is the area code for Newcastle upon Tyne, as well as the surrounding cities of Durham and Sunderland.

Unknownphone.com found Glasgow in fourth place, with 119,125 searches for its area code of 0141.

The most common scams for Glasgow’s area code are to do with Netflix, Paypal, and banking.

Although Birmingham has a bigger population than Glasgow, it comes after the Scottish city with its area code of 0121 receiving 107,140 searches in the last year.

The most common nuisance call activity being reported in this area are bank scams.

As for the least common area codes used for scam numbers, Leicester came in at number 20, according to Unknownphone.com, while Norwich was number 19 and Bolton was number 18.

After looking at his company’s findings, Alberto Edroso Jarne, CEO of Unknownphone.com, shared tips on how to try to avoid and reduce the number of spam calls Britons receive.

He said: “If you frequently receive phone calls from unsolicited numbers, try talking to your phone company and reporting the numbers.

“Most phone companies can provide free services and advice to help block unwanted calls or reduce nuisance calls.”

A second tip is to register with Telephone Preference Service (TPS), according to Mr Jarne.

He said: “Once you register with TPS they will add your number to a list of numbers that don’t want to receive sales and marketing calls.

“It’s against the law for sales people from the UK or overseas to call numbers registered with TPS.”

Thirdly, install a call-blocking app.

Mr Jarne added: “Such apps are able to intercept and answer calls for you, so that they are unable to get through and annoy or expose you to a scam.

“Many of these apps also actively collect data on spammers, blocking them permanently once identified, so you’re helping not just yourself but also others by using the app.”
