Rare Harry Potter book bought at yard sale could fetch thousands at auctionJuly 2, 2019
A worn-out first edition copy of Harry Potter — bought second-hand 20 years ago for roughly $1 — could fetch up to $37,000 at auction this month.
The rare hardback copy of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is one of just 500 original copies, published in 1997 complete with misspellings and typos, a rep from Hansons Auctioneers, which is handling the sale, told SWNS.
The novel’s owner, a 54-year-old office worker from Stafford, England, said he bought one as a vacation read around 1999.
“I thought nothing of it at the time. I read the book…and then put it away in a cupboard for years,” he told the outlet. “It’s so exciting to think that a holiday read could be worth so much now.”
Jim Spencer, an expert on rare books for Hansons Auctioneers, called it the “The holy grail of Harry Potter books.”
An exact date for the auction hasn’t been set.
In April, a first edition copy of the same novel signed by author J.K. Rowling sold for about $90,000.
