‘Pancake Cereal’ Is the Easiest Food Trend Taking Over Quarantine

Have you been making pancakes during quarantine? Get ready to level up with "pancake cereal."

Seriously, staying home while shelter-in-place measures are in effect during the coronavirus pandemic has given people a lot more time to get acquainted with their kitchen. That's led to lots of new experiments, particularly with baking and various whipped drinks, but there's been some disruption of the breakfast game, too. "Pancake cereal" has quickly gone viral on TikTok and Instagram, morphing into a big-time trend food on a tiny scale.

It turns out, "pancake cereal" is actually extremely straightforward. While we're getting flashbacks to French Toast Crunch—that '90s boxed cereal made up of little square pieces designed to look like shrunken-down pieces of French toast—this is something you can just make yourself. Basically, all you do is grab a bottle or a bag with a small incision cut through it and fill it up with pancake batter. Then, you distribute batter discs on a greased pan and start to cook them, the way you would normal pancakes. The sides of them will start to turn a golden shade within a couple of minutes, and you should keep them coming until you have a bunch you can pile together.

On Instagram and TikTok, there are already dozens of versions. Some people are treating the little pancakes like actual cereal and dousing them into bowls of milk. Others are just eating them with fruit, butter, and syrup like you would with any normal-sized batch. The popular food Instagram account The Naughty Fork, run by Sam Schnur, went even further, adding mini m&ms and chocolate chips to her recipe. High-key recommend.

Speaking to Today, Schurr said that there's some history behind the tiny breakfast morsels. “(A similar dish) has been around for quite a while in the Netherlands. They're called poffertijes and are usually made with butter and sugar," she said. "However, I'm using pancake batter, which is a little different, so we can call them mini pancakes."

The best part? You can eat stacks and stacks of these itty-bitty guys and still have room for more.
