Chain reaction! Normal People’s Connell’s silver necklace gets its own Instagram account as Vogue dubs it TV’s most ‘erotically-charged prop’ and sales of men’s jewellery rocket

  • Normal People’s Paul Mescal wear as chain in the show as he portray Connell
  • Fans have lusted over it, with one setting up an Instagram account in its name
  • Asos has seen sales of male jewellery has rocketed 130 per cent since show aired

When the BBC released all 12 episodes of its adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People last week, fans were launched into a social media frenzy, praising the show for it’s portrayal of consensual safe sex as well as swooning over Paul Mescal’s character, Connell.

But some viewers have focused their admiration on one particular part of Connell’s attire – his silver chain- with one starting an Instagram account in its name.

The simple silver chain –  which is described in the book as ‘Argos chic’ and is used to emphasise the class divide between Connell and Marianne (played by Daisy Edgar Jones)  – is rarely off the student’s neck throughout the show, including in steamy shower and sex scenes between the troubled couple.

And now Instagram account, @connellschain, which posts shots of Mescal in the show wearing the jewellery has racked up 27,000 followers in three days, while Twitter users have also revealed their lust for the chain, which Vogue has dubbed the ‘most erotically charged prop’ on TV.

Meanwhie, Asos has revealed sales of male jewellery have rocketed 130 per cent since the show aired, while Argos says searches for men’s chains are up 56 per cent too.

‘The chain around Connell’s neck in Normal People deserves its own Emmy nomination’ on Twitter user recently wrote.

”This is the BBC’, you tell yourself. ‘How sexy will things *really* get?’ Then you see the close-up of Connell’s neck chain and you realise you’ve made a grave mistake.” said another.

‘Connell’s chain. That’s it, that’s the tweet’ added a third.

‘You’re lying if Connell’s chain from Normal People didn’t make you feel a certain way,’ a fellow admirer wrote.

And now it seems the simple silver link chain, which is often associated with 90s heartthrobs and boybands, is having a resurgence thanks to the show. Pictured is Mescal in the show

Lorna Marie Mugan, the show’s costume designer, told the Times that the necklace was so special to Mescal on set that he gifted it to Daisy Edgar-Jones on the last day of filming.

Twitter users have also revealed their lust for the chain and Vogue has dubbed it the ‘most erotically charged prop of TV’

Mescal has also spoken about how the chain was important to getting in character, telling Variety it was temporarily lost but now in his co-star’s possession.

‘I gave it to her as a wrap gift with photographs at the end of filming. We then came back to shoot the poster for the show and I had to wear it and it got lost in all the costumes and stuff but [it was found eventually] and I think Daisy has it now. You can call off the search party!’

He also explained how he ended up wearing that particularly chain.

‘It’s like Harry Potter, the wand chooses you! […] It wasn’t there in the first fitting… then when I came back there was a selection of different ones and that one seemed right because it’s simple but it’s also a statement that I don’t think Connell knows he is making.’

Journalist Billie Bhatia, who started now viral Instagram account, told Stylist, she was inspired by iconic chains in cinematic history when creating the account, naming, Elio in Call Me By Your Name, Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Lurman’s Romeo and Juliet, Jake Gyllenhall in Jarhead,  and Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You.

‘It’s been hilarious, the most I’ve laughed during this lockdown period. I love seeing people tag their friends in the comments or share the account with a hilarious caption (‘Elio walked so Connell could run’ is so far my favourite), because it’s exactly what I would do.
