Non-binary fashion influencer Jamie Windust recalls ‘secretly’ ordering women’s red suede shoes as a teen – as they are announced as an ambassador for Clarks ‘Collective’

A non-binary influencer has opened up about using fashion as a ‘language to describe their gender identity’ in a candid interview about their campaign with footwear brand Clarks.

Speaking about their first foray into experimenting with clothes, Jamie Windust revealed that they once secretly bought a pair of suede red boots, beginning a ‘long exploration’.

‘I bought them under my duvet at home, on my laptop, secretly ordering “women’s” shoes,’ the author and model told Pink News. ‘It was the first time that I put myself in shoes like that and thought: “Oh, this is fun!”‘

The model has been at the helm of movements pushing to offer identity options outside of ‘male’ and ‘female’ on legal documents, and uses they/them pronouns.

According to the shoe seller’s site, the Clarks Collective is made up of ‘change-makers and ambassadors championing racial equality, mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ advocacy and family rights activism’.

Jamie is joined by Basma Khalifa, Gabriella Wilde, Jeannie Jay Park and Vas J Morgan in the campaign.

Speaking to Pink News, they revealed their hope that seeing the initiative in shops and stores will help young people express themselves – and see that there is ‘no one way they can express themselves’.

‘A lot of people might think that, if you’re queer or non-binary, you have to dress really androgynous or femme, but that’s not the case,’ Jamie explained.

According to the shoe seller’s site, the Clarks Collective is made up of ‘change-makers and ambassadors championing racial equality, mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ advocacy and family rights activism’

They  stressed that no one can tell you should look – and encouraged feeling empowered in your own choices.

In a video interview with the brand, where they modelled a chic pair of loafers, Jamie got candid about putting ‘too much pressure on their own shoulders’ to enact change on issues in the community, which ultimately left them unhappy. 

Experimenting with fashion allowed the creator to lean into the fun and ‘silly’ side of the job.

Jamie, who is also a broadcaster and Contributing Editor at Gay Times, has been able to branch out their career and activism because of this.

‘It pays dividends to do things you enjoy and that make you happy,’ they said. 

They donned a checkered emerald blazer over a cardigan and zebra-print shirt with elegant black culottes. 

Another ensemble featured lace-up boots, teamed with tapered lime green trousers, a pearl-toned button-up and a blue sweater vest.

Jamie posted about the campaign on their Instagram last month, sharing a stylish snap from the promotional clip.

The caption read: ‘ad / Great to talk about the highs and lows of my career so far and the importance of adaptation and evolution for the future. Felt like I had a new voice in this chat which was so lovely to find.

‘Thanks again to @clarksshoes and the amazing team that curated and executed this amazing campaign, and here’s to the future of the collective.’
