NHS staff can get two free Uber rides if they're working over Christmas – here's how

December 4, 2018

All 1.7million people employed by the NHS in the UK will be able to claim two free £10 Uber rides between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day – here's how.

If you have an NHS email address, you will be able to claim two free Uber rides this Christmas.

All you need to do is enter your NHS email address on the Uber website.

NHS workers will then receive a code by email for two free £10 rides by December 21.

You then have to download and open the Uber app.

To redeem the code for two free rides, NHS staff have to click the menu on the app in the top left corner, select "Payment" and then click on "Add Promo Code".

All you then have to do is enter the code and you will receive up to £10 off two rides you take between midnight on December 24 and 11.59pm on December 26.

Remember though that if either of your two taxi rides cost more than £10, you will have to pay the difference on the card attached to your Uber account.

Unfortunately you won't be able to combine the two vouchers and use them both on the same ride.

Uber is available in about 20 UK cities, including London, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow.

Without surge pricing, the base fare for a standard UberX is £2.50, plus £1.25 per mile and 15p per minute.

Even in London, £10 will cover most short Uber rides across a couple of miles so the offer should give you two free, or very cheap, rides.

Beware that there is often a minimum fare of £5 – and if you decide to cancel your taxi before it arrives, it can cost you up to £6.

To claim the offer, you have to register your email online by 9am on Christmas Eve. You will only receive two £10 vouchers per person.

Uber says on its website that workers' NHS email addresses will only be used to verify claims and to send the offers, and won't keep them on file for longer than two weeks.

Iceland is also giving NHS staff an extra Christmas present this year as it's offering all emergency service workers 10 per cent off.

There are other taxi services available in London – we've put together a guide to what's on offer in the capital.
