Mrs Hinch fans share penny trick to keep flies out of your home in hot weatherMay 26, 2022
Fans of cleaning queen Mrs Hinch have shared an easy trick to help keep flies out of your home in hot weather.
The warmer months are synonymous with late evenings, wide open windows and smelly food bins, but that also brings with it a number of unwanted pests.
From ant infestations to flies that just can't seem to figure out that the way them came in is also the way to get out, Sophie Hinchcliffe's fans have a solution to make those 'buzztards' buzz off.
Pest control expert at PriceYourJob.co.uk, Walter Murphy, said: "The best way to get rid of flies is by making sure your home is clean and free of any sugary substances, rotting meat or other waste."
He added: "This will involve wiping down surfaces and emptying the bin as often as possible to prevent flies from lingering in your home.
"You can also use natural repellents, such as apple cider vinegar to get rid of flies."
However, a much simpler hack involving a sealable bag, water and a few coins is way more effective, according to the Irish Mirror.
First, fill the clear bag halfway with water.
Then add five or six coins to the bag, squeeze the excess air and close the seal before placing the bag by a window.
Why does this repel flies?
Flies see things differently to regular humans, having what is known as compound vision.
They also hate water, which means the bag is an instant deterrent as they fly towards your kitchen window.
But, even more effective is the scientific merit of dropping the coins in the water.
The water and the pennies creates a prism, which then creates a rainbow of colours which hurt the flies' eyes.
Fans of super cleaner Mrs Hinch shared some of their best hacks on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, which is where one of the group members appealed for help on her quest to de-fly her home.
She said: "Help! Flies!
"I've moved into a house with a glass-roofed conservatory/extension, it's our first summer here, so no previous experience but I'm getting sooooo many flies in and quite a few huge bees."
One Facebook user shared her advice: "Put a few pennies in a clear bag in water and hang it up.. (you need to change the water every now and then though).
"Flies and wasps think it's a wasps nest and stay away!"
She added: "I did this today, I hung it in the centre of the french doors into the conservatory, I've only seen one fly today, well worth a try!"
Another fan recommended: "I put a copper coin on the window sill/ door tread of all open doors.
"No idea why it works but it definitely does!"
TikTok user @alexandrasolera, who often shares useful hacks on the social media platform, shared a video showing how to do it.
She said: "Keeping flies and bees out of your house. It worked for us last year."
One user tried the trick after watching the TikTok video and said: "I do this and it does work.
"Have to hang them in every window though."
