Ex-England rugby ace Mike, 43, trailed behind his daughters, using one hand to push one-year-old son Lucas in a pushchair while carrying jumpers and a children’s backpack in the other.

Taking the field: The family were on hand to cheer on Zara, who was riding her horse Class Affair in one of today’s events

The three-day Burnham Market International Horse Trials, in north Norfolk, will see riders compete in cross country, dressage and show jumping.

Mia, one of the Queen’s great-grandchildren, looked ready for a day in the spring sunshine in her jeans, black trainers and seashell top.

Meanwhile Lena, who turns four this summer, wore a grey frilly long-sleeved top, jeans and trainers.

Ever practical, Mike wore a zip-up jacket, jeans and boots which will allow him to run after his fun-loving girls if he needs to.

The outing gives royal fans their best view yet of baby Lucas, who was born in March last year, just weeks before the death of his great-grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh.

Rough and tumble! The Tindall girls had fun on an inflatable bumper car game as they enjoyed a day out at the horse trials

At one point proud big sister Mia hung back to help her father push Lucas in the pram, suggesting she is embracing her role as the eldest of the Tindall brood.

The outing comes weeks after Mia stole the show at Prince Philip’s service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.

The eight-year-old joined her cousins Savannah and Isla Phillips, and Prince George and Princess Charlotte, as the royals gathered to pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Mia, Lena and Lucas have a close relationship with Savannah and Isla, the daughters of Peter and Autumn Phillips. Both families live at Princess Anne’s Gloucestershire estate of Gatcombe Park and enjoy an outdoorsy childhood.

Hurry up! Mia, eight, and Lena, three, didn’t have time to waste and started to run ahead of their father across the grass
