McDonald's urged to launch McVegan burger in the UK after success of Greggs' £1 sausage roll

November 10, 2019

A NEW campaign has been started urging McDonald's to sell the McVegan burger in the UK.

Animal welfare charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has launched a petition calling for McDonald's to add the vegan burger to its UK menus.

The McVegan is already available in parts of Europe such as Sweden and Finland, and PETA says “it’s high time for the UK to enjoy some McLovin’ too.”

It is a soy-based patty nestled in a bun with lettuce, onions, ketchup and mustard.

When the burger was first trialled in Finland in 2017, UK vegans were quick to demand that McDonald's bring it out over here.

The burger proved a success in Finland where it is still a fixture on the menu.

In the UK, McDonald's fries, the Spicy Veggie One wrap, and apple pies are already suitable for vegans, but there is no plant-based burger option.

So PETA is demanding that the restaurant goes further and brings us the McVegan.

“McDonald’s means burgers, and adding the McVegan would deliver the full package,” says PETA Director Dawn Carr.

If you'd like to see a vegan burger in Britain, you can add your name to the petition here.

It's a letter to the UK CEO of McDonalds.

It reads: “We urge you to meet the booming demand for plant-based foods by adding a meaty vegan burger to the menu at McDonald's.

“Successful businesses adapt to the times, and as more people than ever are opting for vegan meals, they're now the UK's fastest-growing takeaway option.

“The nation's largest bakery chain – Greggs – saw a 58 per cent increase in profits after adding a vegan sausage roll to its menu.

“The McVegan would help make the McDonald's menu more inclusive and appealing to the growing number of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians who are choosing plant-based foods to help protect the health, and animals. Everyone wins!”

PETA were unable to tell us how many people have signed the petition so far, saying that it has only just launched.

The Sun has contacted McDonald's to find out whether they have any plans to introduce the McVegan following PETA's petition.

If we get a response we will update this story.

McDonald’s launches new vegan Happy Meal called the McFalafel for Swedish kids amid rise of plant-only diets.

The chain now does vegan nuggets in Norway – and instead of chicken there’s MASHED POTATO, chickpeas and carrots.

These are the meals at McDonald’s that are under 500 calories… and yes, they include a burger.
