I've Found The Perfect Lipstick for People Who Hate Lipstick

I've Found The Perfect Lipstick for People Who Hate Lipstick

February 21, 2019

The Splurge is our new weekly column dedicated to expensive beauty products that are actually worth it. This week, why we’re rebuying Clé de Peau Beauté Refined Lip Luminizer, despite the $58 price tag.

A swipe of lipstick, along with mascara, is considered “essential” by many people who wear makeup. However, I’ve never been one of those people. Wearing most lipsticks has always felt like work — a part-time job that I never asked for.

To set the record straight: I don’t completely hate lipstick. A clean face with a bright matte lip can look heavenly, but I prefer not to have to deal with the smudging, flaking, dryness, and getting it all over my teeth on a daily basis. That’s why when I do wear lipstick, I go with a satin or glossy finish lipstick in one of those elusive rosy-nude “your lips but better” shades. I can put on one of these neutral shades and not have to check in on it after I’ve eaten a salad with an oily dressing.

Shiny lipsticks may be more low-key than, say, a matte liquid lipstick, but they still come with cons. Some formulas are so tacky they’re basically crumb and hair magnets, while some are moisturizing when they’re freshly applied, but leave lips feeling tight and dry once they’ve worn off.

Finally, after accumulating piles of neutral pink shades that have just been “meh,” I’ve landed on a lipstick that’s the perfect balance of color payoff, shine, and hydration. Oh, and it’s actually low-maintenance.

Clé de Peau Beauté Refined Lip Luminizer is a sheer color lipstick that has a luminous, shiny finish. The formula is also infused with skincare ingredients such as argan oil that plumps, smooths, and hydrates lips. The oil-base of the lipstick makes it essentially effortless to apply because it just glides on, and the bullet’s almond shape makes it easy to follow the natural contours of lips. Plus, the retractible tube makes it impossible to waste any product.

The available shades consist of 14 soft Rococo-inspired colors, ranging from blush pink to peachy coral. Personally, my favorite shade is a toss up between “Old Rose” and “Sweet Satin.” These rosy colors have quickly become my go-to lip product because they’re comfortable and look like, you’ve guessed it, my lips but better.

This Clé de Peau lipstick stand outs among the other lipsticks I’ve tried because it looks just as good when I’ve had it on for a while. I would say it’s pretty long-wearing. Even though I’ll notice some transfer on my coffee cup, fork, or the bite I’ve taken out of a wrap, the lipstick is still even on my lips and the shine hasn’t faded away. Most importantly, my lips still feel soft and smooth the whole time I’m wearing it.

Yes, I may have finally found my everyday “essential” lip product, but it doesn’t come without a caveat. At $58 a pop, this lipstick isn’t cheap. However, since it does only take one swipe to completely cover my lips, I imagine that it’ll take me months before I get to the bottom of my current bullet.

Cost per wear applies to makeup too, am I right?
