‘I split from husband after meeting woman – now we’re blended family’

A mum has lifted the lid on her "blended" family after becoming engaged to a woman following a split from her husband.

Sophie Cachia, 31, shares two kids, Bobby, eight and four-year-old Florence, with her now ex-partner Jaryd.

Despite never being attracted to women, the Australian blogger started questioning her sexuality when she was in her late 20s.

Her husband Jaryd encouraged Sophie, who launched blog The Young Mummy, to explore her feelings while the pair were together.

Their marriage ended in September 2019, but they both remained friends as they co-parented their kids.

Sophie told The Morning Show hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur: "I have had a very 'straight' life my whole life.

"I love my husband, he's a beautiful man. But I had a moment at 27 where I did meet a woman."

Detailing the moment she met the female, Sophie added: "Looking back now, I don't think it was so much her.

"I just think it was that I didn't know myself as well as a 25-year-old would like to think she knew herself."

Sophie said it wasn't "uncommon" for a woman to "discover" who she was in her late 20s.

Then in March this year, the blogger popped the question to her girlfriend Maddie Garrick, a professional basketball player.

Her ex-husband Jaryd has a new girlfriend, Jacinta, who also has a child, an eight-year-old boy named Max.

Sophie said: "[Our] blended family is beautiful.

"And that's not to say that it doesn't face its issues. Any co-parenting situation is difficult.

"We've got three children now among all of us and they see four people that just love each other."

Sophie says her kids understand their "mum and dad are happy" and "it doesn't matter who they are with".

The mum added: "It's just teaching them that life can go in alternative ways.

"I'm really proud of our kids and what they are growing up to see."

While the families are really close, Sophie says co-parenting doesn't come without its challenges.

She detailed: "The biggest challenges are navigating timings and respecting each other's privacy.

"We're four very busy adults so we now have to navigate kids around four different people but at the same time, it's a blessing.

"Our kids are surrounded by so much love, support and as a mum, I couldn't ask for anything more."

Sophie, who released her book Then There Was Her, realised she was attracted to women just two months after her kid was born.
