The cab firm claimed its Uber Green option in central London will “encourage riders to take action on climate change”. Passengers will pay the same price as journeys made in petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles, while drivers will be charged a reduced service fee.Trips must begin in central London but destinations are unrestricted.

Jamie Heywood, regional general manager for northern and eastern Europe, said: “With cities beginning to open up once again, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive a green recovery.”

Since January 2019, Uber has collected an additional 15p for every mile travelled in the capital. That goes directly to drivers to support them with the cost of going electric.

It has raised £125million and resulted in fully electric Ubers in the capital increasing from 100 to 1,600.

But that is only a fraction of the firm’s 45,000 London vehicles. It aims to be fully electric in the city by 2025.
