Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese tradition which uses energy forces to harmonise people with their environment. The word literally translates as ‘wind water’ in English, and the concept comes from an ancient poem that talks about human life being connected and flowing with its environment. Express.co.uk chatted to Feng Shui master Priya Sher (@priyasher on Instagram) to find out how to achieve good Feng Shui in your home.
Priya said: “Feng Shui aims to maximise our potential through enhancing our space.
“It’s about guiding,balancing and optimising the energy within a space to achieve the greatest benefit for the occupants.
“The principles of Feng Shui maintain that we live in harmony with our environment, that we swim with the current, rather than against the tide.
“Homes are a reflection of the people who live in them and each part reflects different aspects of our life.
“If any part is neglected, cluttered or unbalanced then this can be reflected in the life of its inhabitants.”
Priya has revealed exactly how to fix your Feng Shui at home with a few simple tricks.
Start from the first thing you see when you arrive home: the front door.
Priya explained: “The front door relates to our finances, therefore, it should be in perfect condition.
“If the front door is in disrepair then it may impact our potential to make money.
“Ensure it opens smoothly, nothing must block it from opening fully.
“Fix any creaking and broken hinges and freshen the paintwork.
“Place one healthy evergreen such as a bay tree either side of the front door and place a welcome mat outside it to invite positive energy and wealth into your home.”

Next we have the hallway, entrance hall, or corridor that leads into our homes from the front door.
Priya said: “The hallway is a very important space as this is where the energy enters and disperses to the rest of the home.
“Always keep it clear and clutter free so the energy can flow unobstructed.”
That means no clutter, and shoes and coats should be hidden away in a closed cupboard so that they “don’t stagnate the Qi.”
Priya also suggested: “Place a mirror here (but not directly opposite the front door) to open the space and activate your opportunities.
“Place some fresh flowers and light an uplifting woody fragranced candle here to enhance the energy here.”
The living room
We spend a lot of time in our living rooms watching TV, playing games, and socialising over a cup of tea.
Priya said the energy of the living room can impact our relationship with our family so it must always feel inviting and be calm.
She explained: “Always respect the proportions of the living room and select furniture in a size that looks and feels comfortable in the space.
“When furniture is out of proportion with the space it affects our energy, so do not place bulky and overpowering furniture in a small room.
“Ideally, the main sofa must have its back supported by a wall to provide support to the occupants.”
You must also consider how the colour of your walls affect the energy.
Priya said: “Select wall colours according to how much natural light you receive in that room, also considering the size of the room.
“Light, neutrals and pastels always create a more relaxing vibe whereas dark walls in a small room not receiving much natural light can sometimes make the space too moody. This may dull and lower your energy.
“Bright walls in a large room already receiving a lot of natural light can make the energy too active which can make you feel restless and stressed, it is important to have a balance for ultimate relaxation.”
You should also think about adding a lamp or plant to the living room, and Priya suggests placing it in the corner diagonally opposite the door.
This is the living room’s energetic pulse point, she said: “Each room in the home has energetic pulse points.
“This corner is a pulse point for both family harmony and abundance.”

We spend around a third of our lives in our bedrooms, awake and asleep, so it is important to have the energy in this space balanced so that we can recharge our own energy.
Priya said: “To encourage a restful sleep keep electrical items to a minimum and paint the walls a light neutral colour.
“It is vital that the bed is comfortable and it must have a headboard to provide support to the occupants.
“The bed must be positioned with the headboard against a solid wall and ideally shouldn’t be in direct line with the bedroom door.
“Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide balance.
“ Do not place a mirror in a position where you can see your reflection when you sleep as that disturbs your energy.
“If you have a mirror in this position then cover it before your sleep.
“To support your health place a small orchid plant in the corner diagonally opposite the bedroom door.”
Whether you spend much time in the kitchen or not, the kitchen is considered the heart of the home.
Priya said: “The energy here may impact the occupants’ health and also their relationship harmony.
“When designing your kitchen avoid placing the sink and cooker opposite each other as that can lead to arguments between couples, as it creates a crash of the elements water and fire.
“If you have this formation then introduce the colour green in the kitchen to improve balance here.
“The position of the cooker is the most important consideration in the kitchen as it relates to the health for the occupants – avoid positioning it under a window.
“Place three fresh herb plants in the east or south of the kitchen to support the health of the occupants.”
Yep, you even need to consider the energy in your bathroom!
According to Priya, the bathroom is a space where energy is seen as getting ‘flushed’ away.
You can use Feng Shui in the bathroom to keep your bank account in check.
She said: “Always keep this room clean, well ventilated and keep the door closed and toilet lid down.
“This is the area where wealth may get drained (depending on calculations) so introduce some plants in here, as plants soak in water which slows the flow of wealth draining away.
“Fern is a great plant for the bathroom.”
Study or office
If you have a room dedicated to work and study, this is a very important space to practise Feng Shui.
Many of us are still working from home, and these people must pay particular attention to Priya’s advice on this room.
Priya said: “Position your desk in the control position which is the position almost diagonally opposite the office room door.
“However, if you have a large room you can position the desk more centrally.
“Your desk chair should always have the support of a solid wall behind it and you should have a good view of the full room.
“Never have your back in-front of the office room door or window and avoid facing a wall as this formation may block your opportunities.
“Keep your desk organised with no clutter, as a cluttered desk reflects a disorganised mind.
“Place a peace lily plant on your desk to soak up electromagnetic stress.
“Place a money plant in the corner diagonally opposite your office room door in the pulse point for wealth.
“Towards the end of your working day always clear your desk so that you can have a clear mind.”
If you’re lucky enough to have a reading corner or spare room, make this into a space to switch off.
Priya said: “A good location for this is in the northwest of the house in the home.”
She advises to keep this room free from smart phones and technology.
She said: “This room can be used as a meditation or yoga space to support your mind.
“Light candles, play relaxing music, have plenty of cushions and throws for comfort and re-align your mind.
“Today the world is very hectic and we need to balance this with calm in our homes.”
