Cute detail about Prince George in Christmas card – and it breaks royal protocol

December 15, 2018

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shared their annual Christmas card – and it’s a surprisingly casual affair.

The family pose on a large tree branch at their home – all dressed in jeans.

Kensington Palace released the card on social media, writing: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family.

"The photograph, taken by Matt Porteous, shows The Duke and Duchess with their three children at Anmer Hall, and features on Their Royal Highnesses’ Christmas card this year."

It’s hard to decide which of the adorable children steals the show in the snap, but royal fans have noticed one thing in particular.

It hasn’t escaped our attention that Prince George is rocking a cute pair of jeans – when he’s normally seen in shorts.

One fan wrote: "Jeans all round. And Prince George in trousers", followed by shocked face emojis.

Another said: "How great to see Prince George in jeans and wellies instead of short trousers all the time. Lovely picture".

And there’s a very good reason for fans’ surprise.

Normally, the young royal is always dressed in short trousers, wherever he is, whatever the weather – as other young male royals have been seen to do in the past too.

Etiquette expert William Hanson previously told Harper’s Bazaar that Prince George’s given fashion is stipulated by tradition, as "it’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts."

"Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England".

Hanson reckons it’s not until lads reach eight years of age that they start wearing trousers.
