IF YOU’RE a parent or teacher, you either think fidget spinners are the best invention ever – or the most irritating toy ever made.

If you worked in a school in 2017 – when they became insanely popular and every schoolchild wanted one – they're probably the bane of your existence.

We expect you spent much of that year confiscating them from children's hands – they were banned from schools across the country.

Even though they became popular in 2017, they’ve been around – in one form or another – since the early 1990s. Like the stress balls of the 1980s, many kids and adults find them to be useful anxiety relievers.

Researchers have found that fidget spinners can be more than just a distraction to play with at work or while you're waiting for the bus.

They can help people with ADHD and autism to focus and improve their concentration – the idea is that in doing something with your hands, you're better able to pay attention to the task at hand. Some parents also like that they can give them to younger children to keep them occupied – instead of putting them in front of a screen.

While you can still find basic cheap and cheerful fidget spinners, there are ever-more-sophisticated styles available, in materials like plastic, metal, ceramic and silicone.
