Anti-ageing recipe ‘loved’ by beauty expert uses just 4 ingredients

Skincare is important at all ages but when it comes to looking younger, there are a few crucial ingredients everyone should use in their regime. While retinol is known for its skin-cell-renewing abilities, Yvonne Martin, a former consultant at The Skin Culturist  explained that a healthy diet is also important. Speaking exclusively to, the beauty expert shared the easy anti-ageing recipe she “loves”.

Yvonne explained that as much as she recommended vitamin-rich serums and creams, the best remedy to reverse signs of ageing comes from within.

She claimed that while some may not believe it, the phrase “you are what you eat” holds a lot of truth when it comes to mature complexions.

Speaking to about whether a poor diet can worsen signs of ageing, she said: “Yes it does over time. Not just the skin but the whole body – and brain.

“You are what you eat. Cut out processed foods and sugar and eat only nutrient-dense foods, all freshly prepared is what I’ve learnt over the years from some of the top naturopathic doctors, health practitioners and my own experience.”

The hallmark of a healthy diet is consuming five kinds of fruits and vegetables per day, but it doesn’t have to mean complicated cooking.

In fact, there’s one very simple recipe Yvonne swears by for mature men and women.

She said: “I’m a big believer in raw vegetables. For example, I love very thinly sliced (I use a mandolin) raw beetroot then marinated for min of an hour in lemon juice, olive oil, Himalayan salt and black pepper.

“I do the same with Fennel but leave out the oil.”

According to experts at Healthline, the anti-ageing benefits of beetroot stem from its naturally high vitamin C content.

Research by Oregon State University found that the red vegetable has wrinkle-fighting properties when used both topically and as part of a healthy diet.

Beetroot encourages skin cell renewal because Vitamin C is naturally found in both the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis, and the layer of skin under the epidermis, called the dermis.

Boosting the skin’s vitamin C levels has been proven to help neutralise free radicals in the body that lead to oxidative stress. This helps to prevent premature skin ageing and delay the visible signs of biological skin ageing.

While keeping skin healthy from within is one way to minimise signs of ageing, Yvonne highlighted the importance of good topical skincare too.

And one of her non-negotiables for youthful and mature complexions is cleansing.

She said: “If you’re a busy person in the mornings then you’ll want your routine to be quick yet efficient.  I prefer a cleansing balm, oil or milk, however, if the person has cleansed thoroughly before going to bed then a gentle face wash is very good for mornings and is quicker.

“But It also depends on the skin type which products to use of course. I always love Environ and Eminence organics.

“Then after cleansing apply the appropriate serum or oil, moisturiser and SPF. Get the best quality skincare you can afford, but remember paying a higher price doesn’t always necessarily mean a better product.”

When it comes to cleansing, the skincare expert explained that the evening is about double cleansing well.

She said: “I advise people to cleanse before or after dinner and not before they go to bed as they’ll be too tired to do their skincare routine properly – if at all.

“I recommend a good pre-cleansing oil to all skin types or the first cleanse, removed by a warm wet face towel, and then milk or even a rich balm if the skin is very dry for the second cleanse.

“It’s essential to cleanse both AM and PM. At night you’re removing makeup and/ or the pollution from the day. In the morning you’re removing the serum or oil you applied the night before plus your own natural sebum, and perspiration.”
