Affordable Greek getaway – inside Rhodes’ bargain luxury suites with private poolsJuly 22, 2022
We all dream of a five star holiday and a swimming pool all to ourselves, but not many of us can afford it – until now.
Forget your garden paddling pools and sack your seaside staycation. The very best vacation awaits on the Greek Island of Rhodes, and it’s at a budget we can all get on board with.
This sunny spot needs no Instagram filter, and you’ll never fight for a sun lounger again!
Whether you’re a history buff who takes in ancient sites, or simply want to soak up rays with a cooling cocktail, Rhodes has got you covered.
Take a peek at what’s in store…
It’s hard to find a hotel that ticks every box for all your holiday desires on a budget. But the Ixian Grand & All Suites on the Greek island of Rhodes may just be that holy grail of a hotel. Clever architecture means the 69 suites – all with their own pool – feel private, exclusive and deliciously special.
Pick from a suite with its own rooftop pool, a swim-up suite with private deck, a pool in your garden, or even a first-floor suite with a balcony and inflatable armchairs which float on, yes, you guessed it, your own private pool – one floor up! Instagram heaven. Holiday bliss.
That’s a big box ticked. But also consider the beachfront location with stunning views and spectacular sunsets. Tick. The Ixian Grand & All Suites is also an adults-only hotel with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. The helpful staff are chosen for their friendly personalities. And being only 15 minutes from the airport means you can be reclining on your sun lounger by that private pool almost within an hour of landing. Tick. Tick. Tick.
Feed your body and soul
Unwind, relax, rejuvenate. Sound like some of your reasons to go on holiday? With yoga and pilates on a peaceful, secluded, grassy area in dappled shade, plus a gym and water fitness classes, you can pamper your body and calm your mind at the Ixian Grand & All Suites. First impressions of the stunning subterranean spa with its wide, low-lit tunnel to the indoor pool are carried on through to the treatments. Try the incredible deep-tissue massage, then recline on a daybed in the candlelit pool grotto to feel like a true Greek goddess.
Passionate and affable executive chef Nik makes sure the Ixian culinary experience is also a little different. All-inclusive guests can eat in restaurants that serve everything from classic Greek cuisine to Japanese and Peruvian food, while suite guests have exclusive access to the Alazonia Restaurant offering à la carte dining.
The hotel is also happy to make recommendations for outside eateries. We tried Stegna Kozas, the best fish restaurant on Rhodes. Surrounded by Greek families, we started with sea bass ceviche, followed by clams and melt-in-the-mouth razor fish, and ended with baklava and pistachio ice cream. All made by ‘the Barefoot Prince’ – the chef who wears no shoes. Well, you are right on the beach!

Medieval & modern
You can almost taste the past as you wander the cobbled streets in the medieval walled city of Rhodes’ Old Town. Knights from the Order of St John built this fortified city in the 14th Century and it’s still incredibly well-preserved today.
Avoid the hawkers cajoling the cruise-liner crowds into their bars on the main drag. Instead, walk a few metres off the beaten track to find magical, winding backstreets with 88 fairy-lit restaurants. We ate fabulous seafood under a canopy of vines at Ta Petaladika at 8 Menekleous.
Outside the 4km of castle walls, the ‘new’ town has a contemporary feel, clean streets and great shops. Treat yourself to an Armani scarf, Missoni sundress or Michael Kors sunglasses from Di Pi (on the corner of Gr. Lambraki & Amerikis). The owner, Evi, elegant in both style and demeanour, handpicks everything in this gem of a designer boutique.
Rhodes has many sites to tempt you out of the hotel. Top of the list is the Acropolis at Lindos, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. The ruins of the ancient temple are perched on a clifftop above the winding streets of Lindos village.
Go early to avoid the heat and crowds, following the same narrow pathway up that people in the 9th Century BC would also have climbed, and be rewarded by walking among the temple’s towering columns with a breathtaking backdrop of the blues of sea and sky.
Another must-see is the landmark at Filerimos which offers a shady avenue walk to a giant 16m-high cross, stunning panoramic views down across the island, and an ostentation of peacocks (how apt is the collective noun for peacocks?) all shrieking and showing off their tail feathers.
