Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ‘not allowed’ to find out gender of their baby because of the Queen, royal expert claims

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will wait until the day the royal tot is born in spring to find out whether they have a son or a daughter.

Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter said that the baby’s gender is kept a secret as it is “royal philosophy” to wait until the big day.

She said to Honey.nine.com: “There’s a belief that there are so few surprises left in life why not save the biggest one for the moment a child is born.

“This is not just a Royal philosophy, many parents across the UK choose not to find out.”

This is typically a standard rule for members of the royal family, although the Queen hasn’t made an official ban.

Even Kate and Will themselves are reported to have chosen not to find out the gender of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis until the births.

Victoria continued that baby showers are typically not held, although Meghan has broken this protocol and is currently on a five-day New York bash with her friends to celebrate her baby.

She said that while the royals are "very wealthy” that “a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate…There's nothing they can't go out and buy themselves".

Meghan’s best friends, including Jessica Mulroney, organised the special baby shower party on Tuesday at an exclusive New York hotel.

The duchess has been spotted buying baby clothes at high-end store Bonpoint and enjoying a leisurely lunch in the city.

Victoria added that while it is a “longstanding American tradition, most Brits prefer to bestow gifts once the baby’s been born and the sex revealed”.

Royal protocol dictates the Queen must know before anyone else – including grandparents – that the baby has been born.

So while Meghan might be keen to make a trans-Atlantic phone call, Prince Harry will probably have to follow in his brother's footsteps and inform the Queen via encrypted telephone first.

And according to reports, pregnant royals are encouraged to keep travelling abroad to a minimum, although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are to visit Morocco later this month.

Meghan flew to see her best mates after enjoying a low-key Valentine’s Day meal with husband Harry, 33, on Thursday night.

The Sun revealed he’d taken a £26,000 private jet to make it to Norway and back in a day so he could spend the evening with his wife.
