There’s no need to banish sparkle once the festive season comes to an end.
Sequins have long been a failsafe option when dressing for party season, and nothing says Christmas like a dazzling skirt or knit. But now we’re waving goodbye to the festive season, it’s time to start thinking about how we can style our sequin dresses, skirts and shirts into spring and beyond, taking them from a winter wardrobe staple to a year-round essential.
Of course, New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, so sequins are in no short supply. And if you’ve already shopped for a perfect sparkly party look or a standout sequin dress, the last thing you want to do is have it linger in your wardrobe until next Christmas rolls around.
This is particularly true given that campaigners have raised concerns about the environmental impact of sequinned pieces, which are often worn rarely before being cast into landfill. We could all do with getting more use out of the sequinned pieces currently hanging in our wardrobes – but how should we wear the sparkly stuff when it’s dark and drizzly in January, unpredictable in March or hot and sweaty come summer?
We’ve turned to some of our favourite fashionable women for inspiration below. Scroll for five ways to wear sequins, now and throughout 2023 – because it’s always a good time to play with a bit of sparkle.
Try a sequin skirt and statement shirt
Sequin skirts are one of the easiest sparkly styles to wear, because they can be styled in a whole host of ways. To amp up the glamour, add a statement heel, shimmery top and bright and bold bag. By contrast, a simple white T-shirt and trainers will keep it casual.
Sequin boots will add instant sparkle to any occasion
Of course, you may not reach for these to walk to the supermarket, but sequin boots are incredibly cool. Wear with a dress, trousers or skirt and shirt for a look that’s destined for the dancefloor – when you really want to make a statement, they’re sure to be the star of the show.
Style down a sequin dress
Dresses over jeans are a real Y2K style statement, and unsurprisingly the look is coming back into fashion. While it may not be for everyone, this styling trick instantly pares back a standout sequin frock into a much more casual outfit that’s as cool as it is chic.
Select just a splattering of sequins
Not all sequin looks have to be head-to-toe studded with sparkly pieces of plastic. This simple black shirt uses thin stripes of sequins to make a real style statement that can work for almost any occasion. And the black sequin trousers pair perfectly with a velvet blazer for a luxe look.
Sequins are still in style
While there are myriad ways to weave sequins into your everyday wardrobe, there’s no need to tone down a seriously sparkly look. Sequins always have and always will be perfect for parties, and bright, bold colours will only accentuate their appeal.
