Why Anna Paquin Is Defending Her Marriage

Why Anna Paquin Is Defending Her Marriage

May 19, 2021

Will it ever stop? “True Blood” star Anna Paquin has been defending her sexuality and her marriage for over a decade since she came out as bisexual in 2010 (via People). The time in 2014 when the actress patiently explained to a befuddled Larry King that when she married a man she didn’t throw her bisexuality into the trash comes to mind. “I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point.” Paquin said (via The Washington Post).

As exhausting as it must be for Paquin to continuously field bewildered questions about her sexual identity, Paquin has been posting on Instagram for the last week in prep for LGBTQIA+ pride month (in June). Having already told her straight followers who got hot and bothered about her posts to “hit that unfollow button right now… and go f**** yourselves” (via Instagram), Paquin also got flak from the LTBTQIA+ community after posting “I’m a #proudbisexual who is married to a wonderful human who happens to be a man.”

As People recently caught via screenshot, the “X-Men” alum bit back after a follower angrily tried to delegitimize her sexuality and life choices. “I am getting tired of seeing ‘bi’ celebrities constantly advocate for it only to end up conventionally married to men with multiple children, living out the so-called white-picket-fence life,” the follower wrote.

Anna Paquin really doesn't care what you think about her life choices

On an Instagram story, Anna Paquin snapped back at her challenger writing, “Ah yes … the ‘you aren’t queer enough’ BS” (via People). As we said, this isn’t the first time that Paquin’s had to defend herself for being bisexual and falling in love with a man. (The actress married her “True Blood” co-star Stephen Moyer in 2010. They currently have two kids). Years ago, she told her audience during a HuffLive interview that “there’s people that think that monogamy and bisexuality are mutually exclusive. Again, their problem not mine” (via Cosmopolitan). But Paquin continues to announce her bisexuality publicly because she thinks that the more we talk about it “the more normal and, frankly, mundane and boring this stuff becomes.”

The formula goes something like this: when something becomes boring, it’s less controversial, which is good. Not that we’re announcing anything new here, but Anna Paquin has been a happily married bisexual woman for 11 years now. And although her sexual orientation makes headlines annually, it might be worth asking why Paquin’s relationships and sexual orientation interest us more than the fact that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (who haven’t told us they’re not hetero), have been hitched since before people learned to slice bread?
