David and Victoria Beckham have reportedly donated £1million to UNICEF as they kicked off their emergency appeal to provide aid for the people of Ukraine, which was launched on Tuesday.

Taking to his Instagram account to announce the new initiative via his 7 Fund for UNICEF on International Women’s Day, retired footballing icon David shared a sombre video in which he addressed the camera directly and spoke of feeling ‘helpless’ in the face of the unfolding ‘scenes of such despair’ in the country.

Explaining that his role as a long time Global Goodwill Ambassador meant he was confident in the charity’s ability to deploy aid in conflict situations, he added: ‘Victoria and I have made a donation on behalf of our family to kickstart the appeal. We would be so grateful if you would join us to help UNICEF support these innocent children. Please give what you can today.’

An insider has now told MailOnline that the pair ‘personally donated £1m to the emergency appeal’, adding: ‘They wanted to do everything they could to help UNICEF in their work on the ground in Ukraine.’

The source continued: ‘David has been a Goodwill Ambassador for 17 years and raises millions a year to support UNICEF and their work for children around the world.

‘This is in addition to the projects he funds under the umbrella of his 7 Fund which aims to support children around the world, particularly girls realise their potential.’

David, 46, added in his caption: ‘Mothers forced to flee with their children. Families torn apart. Children taken from their beds to become refugees overnight. As the conflict in #Ukraine enters its second week, the needs of families are escalating and 7.5m children are now at risk.

‘Today, on International Women’s Day, my 7 Fund for @UNICEF is setting up an Emergency Appeal to help provide immediate aid to support children’s wellbeing, including medical supplies and safe spaces for families.

‘Please join me in supporting UNICEF in its vital work on the ground and give what you can.’

Former Spice Girl turned designer Victoria shared the same video on her Instagram account, labelling the situation in her caption ‘truly heartbreaking’, as she urged her fans to donate if they were able to.

She also made a rare live appearance on her Instagram Stories as she spoke to her followers, saying: ‘Today is International Women’s Day and here at Victoria Beckham we have been focusing our attention on the women and children of the Ukraine. Today I’ll be sharing though my Instagram Stories information about organisations providing crucial, crucial help.’

‘Please, please donate if you can,’ she added, before sharing a slide on the UNICEF emergency appeal, as well as other charity initiatives.

Last Friday, the former singer had shared a touching tribute and throwback snap to mark their oldest son Brooklyn’s 23rd birthday as she told him he had ‘changed her life forever’.

Brooklyn is set to tie the knot with his American fiancée Nicola Peltz on April 9, with Vogue reportedly requesting exclusive rights to what is sure to be a swanky affair.

The couple is also parents to sons Romeo, 19, and Cruz, 17, and daughter Harper, 10, with middle son Romeo recently putting in an appearance at the Saint-Laurent fashion show at Paris Fashion Week with his mum, where he towered over her despite her heels. contacted reps for David and Victoria Beckham for comment.
