Ulrika Jonsson claims I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2021 “feels unnatural and so fabricated”. The 54-year-old said it is the Wales location that “isn’t cutting it for me”.
It’s like watching an episode of Crossroads but with rats and testicles
The ITV programme, hosted by Ant and Dec, remained in the UK for the first time ever last year.
Normally hosted from the Australia jungle, Covid travel restrictions meant it could not go ahead as usual.
And the latest run, which started last week, has followed suit, being based again at North Wales’ Gwrych Castle.
The presenter has today compared the 21st season to ITV soap Crossroads.
Ulrika said the current set-up “feels like a set”, before remarking “because, I guess, it is”.
Despite saying I’m A Celebrity was always a “firm favourite” in her household, that is no longer the case.
She stated in her column: “For years, the whole family would gather in front of the telly and watch it religiously with as much enthusiasm as fear, dismay and astoundment.
“There simply was not a better show on TV than one making celebrities do things they could never have contemplated at the height of their career.”
But it was then that she went to say how her perspective had changed, while crediting those behind I’m A Celebrity for keeping it going.
The ex Shooting Stars regular continued: “I understand Covid has put a massive spanner in the works of so many productions and TV programmes and it’s no one’s fault.
“… But the Wales location just isn’t cutting it for me.”
Ulrika added in her piece for The Sun: “It feels unnatural and so fabricated somehow. It feels like a set because, I guess, it is.
“It’s like watching an episode of Crossroads but with rats and testicles.”
Crossroads is a British soap opera that ran over two periods – the original between 1964 and 1988, followed by a short revival from 2001 to 2003.
Meanwhile, I’m A Celebrity first aired back in 2002 and had always been based Down Under until 2020.
Firstly the unlucky campmates were holed up in Queensland, before a swift move to New South Wales.
This year’s celebrties include Adam Woodyatt, Arlene Phillips, Danny Miller, David Ginola, Frankie Bridge and Kadeena Cox.
They are joined by Louise Minchin, Matty Lee, Naughty Boy, Simon Gregson, Snoochie Shy and Richard Madeley.
However, the latter exited earlier this week, after he sought medical attention and therefore broke the strict covid bubble.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2021 continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
