‘The Voice’ Finalist Kennedy Holmes Belts Out a Beyonce-Inspired Version of Demi Lovato’s “Confident”

December 19, 2018

This season, three out of four of the finalists on NBC’s reality-TV music show, The Voice, were country artists. So the one pop/R&B-oriented finalist, Kennedy Holmes, decided to go big if she was going to go home. She decided to sing a powerful cover of Demi Lovato’s hit, “Confident” — while mixing in performance elements inspired by another of her idols, Beyonce.

Kennedy took her inspiration from clips she had seen of Beyonce’s headlining performance at the 2018 Coachella festival. And so, to add emphasis to Demi’s already booming pop anthem to self-belief, Kennedy performed in front of a marching band’s brass and percussion sections, while mashing up the kind of Vegas-flavored floor show Demi might choreograph with flourishes of the ‘stomp-the-yard’ footwork seen at Beyonce’s Coachella performance.

“I just knew that I wanted a marching band,” Kennedy said to People Magazine after last night’s show. “I wanted it to be big. This was my last performance on The Voice, might as well go big or go home.”
