Susanna Reid apologises to Good Morning Britain guest after ‘sexist’ errorOctober 19, 2021
Susanna Reid has publicly apologised to a Good Morning Britain guest after the breakfast show failed to show her professor title, despite broadcasting the male professors’ titles.
Professor Devi Sridhar, the Chair of Global Public Health, Edinburgh, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday morning alongside Professor Angus Dalgleish, Professor Adam Finn, and data specialist John Burn-Murdoch to discuss the latest Covid headlines.
However, Professor Devi was left upset after realising that her professor title hadn’t appeared on screen like her male counterparts’ had.
Taking to Twitter to share her disdain, Professor Devi wrote: “Can women be professors in 2021?”
Responding via her personal Twitter account, Susanna replied: “I am really sorry that this happened. We introduced you with your title Professor but inexplicably it wasn’t on screen.”
Accepting the apology, Professor Devi wrote back: “Innocent mistake – thanks always Susanna.”
But fans were left appalled by the on-air mistake. One commented: “@GMB blatant misogyny again. Why was @devisridhar not given her professional title?”
Another wrote: “Everyday sexism. This is not ok.”
A third added: “This is one of those subtle examples of misogyny that most don’t notice.
“But it’s exactly these small, possibly unconscious, differences in how men and women are treated that normalise the bigger differences. It snowballs.”
Professor Devi had been brought on the show to discuss whether the UK should have a plan B when it comes to Covid preparation this winter.
Expressing her expert opinion, she said: “The UK should learn from our European neighbours, for instance, masks in public spaces, vaccine certification and pushing vaccination to the higher level.
"The NHS is struggling and they struggle every winter and this winter they have Covid on top of it."
Good Morning Britain landed in hot water earlier this week when stand-in host Richard Madeley and Susanna discussed Kate Middleton’s appearance, rather than her involvement in the environmental Earthshot Prize Awards.
Richard said to Susanna: “She’s so slim isn’t she, Kate?"
Susanna then replied: "She is, isn't she?" as Richard added: "Tiny, tiny waist."
One frustrated viewer commented: “Whole VT about climate change…what earthshot can do for the planet…switch back to @richardm56 and all he says is about how slim Kate Middleton is. Geez do better. #gmb."
While another added: “Oh Richard, just sat watching gmb and I was horrified when I heard your comment about the size of Kate’s waist!" as another added: "Richard is it really necessary to make personal comments about Kate like that?"
